Get back in your books!

One of my friends mentioned to me this series of photographs entitled “Get Back in Your Books” by Lissy Elle Laricchia. Her work features many magical and fairy-tale motifs.

This one is described as “a collection of characters who strive to stay in the real world”.

The photographs depict Alice, Belle, the Sleeping Beauty, Wendy and a Harry Potter character.

After Grimm: Fairy Tales and the Art of Storytelling

Thursday 6th – Saturday 8th of September 2012

2012 is the bicentenary of the publication of the first volume of the Kinder- und Hausmärchen [Children’s and Household Tales] by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. As this groundbreaking collection moves into its third century, this conference explores the trajectory of the Grimm phenomenon in Britain and the English-speaking world. Examining the varied and colourful reception history of this collection of tales, this conference will discuss the most recent fairy-tale scholarship, as well as looking forward to possible future developments. The Grimm bicentenary will also be celebrated through storytelling events, readings, a creative writing prize, and an exhibition of illustrations.

Confirmed Keynote Speakers

  • Donald Haase
  • Neil Philip
  • Marina Warner
  • Jack Zipes

This conference is being run collaboratively by Kingston University and The Sussex Centre for Folklore Fairy Tales and Fantasy and the University of Chichester.

You can download the programme here.

The Storyteller, Jim Henson

One of my favourite TV shows as a kid (some things definitely do not change)

The stories are all old fairy tales narrated by John Hurt as the Storyteller. Now I’ve watched them again I’ve realised that some great British actors play in them -notably a young Sean Bean as a Prince Charming. The stories are beautifully told, lasting about twenty minutes each. Henson’s world and his animatronics are impressive and still magical (just corny enough to be charming) a great tribute to storytelling.

The VHS trailer (yes, it is that old.) :

My favourite episode as a child was the Three Ravens :

Maleficient, Angelina Jolie

Quite a lot of talk over the release of the first official picture of Angelina Jolie as Maleficient…the Disney villain which terrorised so many generations of children…

So it seems that even Disney is turning to a focus on the villains! There are not many details out yet, so I’m not too sure whether it will be simply a retelling of the Sleeping Beauty or whether we will have a bit more details on Maleficient herself, her motives etc, will she be purely evil or will Disney be a bit more subtle than usual?

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her Own Making

I know that you should not judge a book (only) by its cover but I have to say that when I got this one through the post yesterday, I was very excited! I hope it is as good as everybody says, it is now on my mental summer reading list (list which is growing by the day and probably a bit too ambitious, but well, let’s be optimistic!)

Alice Chan

I somehow came across this Little Mermaid, and fell in love with it:

The artist herself calls it cheesy, but I really like how it conveys the melancholia of the original version, despite being clearly influenced by the Disney version.

Here are a few others :

Goldilocks meets the Three Bears

The Frog Prince

Rapunzel Plays Hard To Get By

The Snow Queen and her Lover
